Where Can I Get Travel Vaccinations?

When it comes to obtaining travel vaccinations, you have several options:

  1. General Practitioner (GP): Your GP is often the first point of contact for travel vaccinations.
  2. Travel Clinics: Specialised travel clinics focus specifically on providing vaccinations and health advice for travellers.
  3. Pharmacies: Some pharmacies offer travel vaccination services.
  4. Private Healthcare Providers: these sometimes offer travel vaccination services.

To determine which option you should take, book a video consultation with our Travel Health Nurse Specialist here.

What Vaccinations Are Free on the NHS?

While some travel vaccinations are free on the NHS, others may require payment. Vaccines that are usually available for free on the NHS include:

  • Hepatitis A

  • Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR)
  • Meningitis ACWY (for specific ages)
  • Shingles (For certain Ages)

Not all travel vaccinations are provided for free, so it is advisable to check with your GP or Travel Clinic regarding costs for vaccines that may not be covered.

What Vaccines Would I Have to Pay For?

If attending a Travel Clinic, you will be expected to pay for the vaccines mentioned above as well as the following vaccines:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Rabies
  • Japanese Encephalitis
  • Yellow Fever
  • Dengue Fever
  • Whooping Cough
  • Shingles (For over 50s)
  • Chicken Pox

The cost may vary between clinics.

How to Get Vaccinations for Travel

Getting vaccinations for travel is a relatively straightforward process:

  1. Consultation: Schedule an appointment with our Nurse Specialist. During the consultation, the nurse will discuss your travel plans, medical history, and any pre-existing health conditions to determine which vaccines you need.
  2. Vaccination Schedule: Our Nurse Specialist will recommend a vaccination schedule based on your destination, length of stay, and personal health factors. Some vaccines require multiple doses administered over a period of weeks or months, so it is essential to plan accordingly.
  3. Planning your vaccines: Our Nurse Specialist can point you in the right direction for reputable travel clinics in your area where you can start your vaccine courses.
  4. Documentation: We will send you a record of your consultation with us, which we advise you to take with you to the travel clinic of your choice.

How Long Before Travel Do I need Vaccinations?

The timing of your vaccinations is crucial to ensure optimal protection before your trip. Ideally, you should schedule your vaccinations at least 4-6 weeks before your departure date. This allows sufficient time for the vaccines to take effect and for any courses to be completed.

However, even if your departure is approaching soon, it is still worthwhile to seek vaccination advice. As some courses of vaccines can be administered via a rapid course. Our Nurse Specialist will be able to discuss further. Book Here
